The best time to visit Uruguay is during the spring and summer. These months have great weather for exploring the country and getting in some beach time!

Spanish is the official language of Uruguay. However, many Uruguayans, especially those in the tourism industry, understand some English. We definitely recommend learning some Spanish phrases, as that will make it much easier to get around and connect with locals!

Yes, Uruguay is very safe. We never felt unsafe or uncomfortable anywhere we went. As long as you're aware of your surroundings (especially in the bigger cities) you should be fine!

The Uruguayan peso (UYU) is the official currency. While credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas, carrying some UYU for smaller purchases and taxis is recommended. We also found that lots of places would accept US dollars as well!

How to Get Around Uruguay

Buses are the cheapest and most popular way to travel around Uruguay – this includes both city buses and longer distance buses. Taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber are also available in major cities. Renting a car offers flexibility, but of course that comes with higher costs.
