Albania

Nestled along the Balkan Peninsula, Albania is a captivating country that quickly became one of our favorites because of its diverse landscape. With amazing hiking, a long, beautiful coastline, stunning Ottoman towns, and some crazy history, you’ll certainly find something you love about Albania.

April - October
The best months in Albania are generally the summer months, where it will still be cool enough for hiking in the mountains and hot on the coast. However, it can get pretty hot in the inland cities and towns during that time, so keep that in mind when planning your trip!

The main language is Albanian, with English and Italian also being widely spoken, especially by the younger generations.

Yes, Albania is very safe. We never felt unsafe or uncomfortable anywhere we went.

Albania uses the Albanian Lek, which you can only get from inside Albania. The Euro may be accepted in some cities near the border, but try to always have Lek on you as Albania is a very cash heavy country, and places will rarely accept credit cards.

How to Get Around Albania

The easiest way (and the recommended way) to get around the country is to rent a car and do a road trip. This will allow you to stop off wherever you please and see whatever parts of the country you want without having to deal with public transportation.

However, if you’re on a budget and/or don’t want to rent a car, it’s definitely possible to explore the country using public transportation, like we did. You’ll be using buses to get around; the buses are generally okay – not anything crazy but usually not super uncomfortable – but some of them can get hot in the summer. It’s next to impossible to book a bus ticket online (which I wouldn’t recommend anyway, as that would likely be more expensive) and some of the smaller towns may not even have a bus station. We honestly found that the best way to catch a bus is to go downtown and wave down buses that were going in the direction that we wanted to go to. We would check to make sure the bus route existed using Gjirafa, which was usually pretty accurate when we were in bigger cities/towns, but less accurate when we were in smaller towns. Though it was definitely a different way of traveling, we always found a bus to our next destination, and the locals were always willing to help us out when we were feeling lost!
